The Washington Post hails Burgess and his eponymous Company – “not only a Washington prize, but a national dance treasure.”\n \nBurgess will discuss his award-winning memoir, Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly, in an onstage conversation with Margaret Andersen. Their discussion will explore Burgess’s remarkable personal and artistic journey, his multicultural heritage, the development of his career, and the experiences that have shaped his choreography. Members of the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company will bring the conversation to life through live dance excerpts of the Company’s signature work, giving the audience an opportunity to see how memory, identity, history, and personal experience are translated into movement.This special OCC presentation offers audiences something rarely experienced in a traditional performance setting: the opportunity to hear the story behind the dance and then see those ideas expressed through movement onstage.\n \nBurgess founded the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company in 1992 and has become a leading figure in American modern dance. Known internationally as the “Diplomat of Dance,” Burgess has served as a U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassador for more than two decades. His work explores the joy, sorrow, beauty, and complexity of the human experience, frequently drawing upon questions of cultural identity and belonging. His company has performed throughout the United States and internationally, bringing modern dance to audiences around the world. In 2016, he was named the Smithsonian Institution’s first-ever Choreographer-in-Residence, establishing a groundbreaking relationship between contemporary modern dance and the visual arts at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.\n \nHis memoir, Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly, traces the experiences and relationships that helped shape him as an artist and choreographer. The award-winning book provides a deeply personal window into the cultural influences, mentors, family history, and artistic discoveries behind his work. A fourth-generation Korean American, Burgess’s ancestors arrived in Hawaii aboard the Gaelic in 1903. They were among the very first groups of Korean immigrants who settled in America, working on sugarcane and Del Monte pineapple plantations. His mixed-race heritage (Korean and Scottish-Irish ancestry) serves as a primary thematic anchor for his career. Copies of his book will be available on site for purchase.\n \nThanks to exclusive partnership between the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company with the Asian Wine Association of America, the evening also features a viticultural experience. Prior to serving on the federal bench, Judge Davis served on\nMaryland’s district and circuit state courts and as an attorney with the Department\nof Justice and in private practice.\nJudge Davis received his B.A. in American History from the University of\nPennsylvania and his J.D., with honors, from the University of Maryland School of\nLaw, where he currently serves as Distinguished Jurist in Residence. During his\n30-year judicial career, Davis was active in numerous national and international\njudicial and legal education and Rule of Law training programs through his\nmembership on the Judicial Conference of the United States Committee on\nInternational Judicial Relations; the Einstein Institute for Science, Health and the\nCourts; the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience;\nand the Federal Judicial Center.\nIn retirement, Judge Davis has continued his efforts to advance the cause of equal\njustice and the rule of law, among other commitments, as a member of the Article\nIII Coalition which brings together retired federal judges to defend the\nindependence of the Constitution. Professor Terry J. Hart brings this history to life and shares many personal stories from his career in aviation and space flight.\nAbout the Speaker:\nTerry Hart ’68 is a former NASA astronaut, US Air Force fighter pilot, and telecommunications executive who joined Lehigh’s faculty in 2004.  He was aboard the STS 41-C Challenger, NASA’s eleventh Space Shuttle mission, launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 6, 1984.  The Challenger crew members logged 168 hours in orbit above the Earth and were the first astronauts to repair a satellite from the shuttle.  On that mission Hart conducted the first rendezvous of the shuttle program with his commander, Bob Crippen, and operated the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) that retrieved the Solar Maximum Satellite for repairs.  He also operated the IMAX camera for the feature The Dream is Alive (1985).\nHart is the holder of two patents for his previous work at Bell Laboratories in noise suppression circuitry and safety devices for electronic power converters.  His current research activities include spacecraft attitude control and trajectory optimization.  Hart is also a current FAA Certified Flight Instructor, and a member of AIAA, IEEE, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi.  Honors and awards include induction into the Space and Satellite Hall of Fame, the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame, the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni, the New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, the Pride of Pennsylvania Medal, the NASA Space Flight Medal, the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Lehigh University Alumni Award.\nhttps://engineering.lehigh.edu/faculty/terry-j-hart\n

Kozel completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Maryland and his Master of Science and Master of Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. Students will paint on their own individual framed screens using high quality vinyl screens along with all paints and materials included during workshops. Painted screens, when finished, will remain on wooden 13×19” frames for theirs to keep!  Themes are considered as “varied “.  Children and/or Adults attending will learn the history, tools, and techniques to successfully paint on a screen, I provide various exemplary photos, books, and completed painted screens of various sizes.\n      This 112-year-old art form is often overlooked due to its blue-collar origins.  Because of its warm embrace in Baltimore row house neighborhoods and the dedication of the Painted Screen Society over the last 50 years, we have enabled people from all over the world to enjoy this magical, yet very functional art form. It is my goal to share MAGIC with as many people of all ages!\n \nJOHN R IAMPIERI\nJohn is a visual artist interested in sharing the magical, very functional art form of screen painting.  Growing up in Baltimore, he experienced seeing hand painted screens everywhere in many Baltimore row house neighborhoods.  He is a member of the Baltimore Painted Screen Society. John has traveled throughout Maryland teaching this 112-year-old folk art. He is a roster member with MSAC & roster member of Young Audiences of MD enabling him to teach in schools, creating residency workshops from one day to two-week programs\nthroughout Maryland, VA, & DE using 21st Century and common core curriculum standards. He is also a member of many Art leagues throughout DE & MD and works with many charitable organizations donating screens for fundraisers.\n     In windows, screen doors, wall hangings and as porch enclosures. As part of their exhibit “With Valor and\nHonor: Talbot County’s United States Colored Troops During the Civil War.” the\nNathanial Hopkins’ story is featured—a former enslaved individual who volunteered for\nthe USCT.  Hopkins emerged as an influential post-war leader within Talbot County.\nRenowned for his integrity and leadership, he earned wide respect for assisting\nindividuals in need regardless of race and contributed to the establishment of schools,\nchurches, and black communities following the Civil War. Hopkins’ most notable\naccomplishment, however, was founding Maryland’s—and likely the nation’s—first\nEmancipation Day celebration in 1867, an event still observed annually and set to be\ncelebrated this year with a parade through Trappe on Nov. 1 st and a professional\nstorytelling at OCC.\nFREE, but RSVP.\n

DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe Anderson Brothers – A tribute to Duke Ellington\n\n\n\n\nFriday, August 1st 7:30PM\n\n\n\n\n “Virtuosos on clarinet and saxophone” (New York Times), identical twins Peter and Will Anderson are two of the most extraordinary  jazz woodwind players today.  Born and raised in Washington D.C., the Andersons moved to New York City to attend The Juilliard School.  They’ve performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Wycliffe Gordon, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Paquito D’Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, and can be heard on the 2014 Grammy-winning soundtrack of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks.  They’ve headlined at Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Feinstein’s 54 Below, Blues Alley, Birdland, and live on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion Radio Program.  The Andersons have performed in over 40 U.S. states, throughout Brazil, Japan, the U.K., and six times in NYC’s famed Highlights in Jazz series, alongside Lou Donaldson, Jimmy and Tootie Heath, Ken Peplowski, Steve Turre, Warren Vache, Frank Vignola, and Jimmy Cobb.\n           Vanity Fair magazine listed their debut album, Correspondence, featuring Kenny Barron, alongside Miles Davis in “Four New Releases to Make You Love Jazz,” and the Washington Post called their music “imaginatively unfolding in ways that consistently bring a fresh perspective to classic jazz.”  Peter and Will received a 2014 Drama Desk nomination for their Off-Broadway Production, Le Jazz Hot (one of seven sold-out productions at 59E59 Theaters), and in 2018 were Bistro Award winners.  Their 2014 album, Deja Vu, was called “a burner that reveals the band’s cohesiveness and spirit” (JazzTimes).  Last year, the Andersons raised $25,000 to establish the Joe Temperley Juilliard Student Scholarship Fund and tribute album in honor of their late great saxophone mentor.  Peter and Will are teaching artists through Juilliard’s Nord-Anglia program, conducting school workshops in Orlando, Charlotte, Washington D.C. and Chicago.  They’ve lectured at over 100 high schools countrywide and Universities including Michigan State, Ohio State, Florida State, Temple, Xavier, Scranton, South Florida, Lenoir-Rhyne, Central Oklahoma, Jacksonville, William Paterson and in Nagasaki, Japan.\n             Peter and Will can be heard and seen in the major motion pictures Revolutionary Road, Killers of the Flower Moon, Boardwalk Empire, and The Marvelous Ms. Maisel.  They performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars in After Midnight, which ran on Broadway from 2013-2014, and featured Vanessa Williams, KD Lang, Fantasia Barrino, and Patti Labelle.  In 2017, the Andersons directed “The Fabulous Dorsey Brothers” in J@LC’s Appel Room, narrated by The Wire and Treme actor, Clarke Peters.  Also that year, they completed a 30-day National tour sponsored by Allied Concert Services, on a roster of artists including The Boston Brass and Ann Hampton Callaway.   \nMore about the Anderson Brothers: https://peterandwillanderson.com/\n\n\n

Diehl also performed Zodiac Suite with the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras under the batons of Cristian Măcelaru and Jader Bignamini, respectively.\nIn September 2023, Diehl released his recording of Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite with The Knights, a Brooklyn-based orchestral collective led by conductor Eric Jacobsen. As the first-ever studio recording of Mary Lou Willams’s Zodiac Suite, it has been touted as “a joyous, enchanting creation… a triumph” (The Guardian) with Diehl lauded as “a contemporary champion” (The New York Times) and “a perfect choice to preside over this landmark recording” (The Wall Street Journal). The album features Diehl’s trio and guest artists saxophonist Nicole Glover, clarinetist ​​Evan Christopher, trumpeter Brandon Lee, and soprano Mikaela Bennett. The critically-acclaimed album is Diehl’s fourth recording on Mack Avenue Records, following 2020’s The Vagabond, 2015’s Space Time Continuum, and his 2013 label debut, The Bespoke Man’s Narrative.\nDiehl was born in Columbus, Ohio, where he grew up listening to his grandfather, pianist and trombonist Arthur Baskerville. His family nurtured Diehl’s undeniable musical talents from a young age and in 2002, a 16-year-old Diehl competed in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition, where he placed as a finalist. As a Pro Musicis International Award winner, she gave her solo debuts in Carnegie Recital Hall, New York, and Jordan Hall, Boston. The Boston Globe enthused about her “beautiful differentiations of color, touch and texture” and described a performance on her solo debut CD as “not inferior…to the recorded performances by Cortot and Rubinstein.” She has also given European Pro Musicis solo debuts in Paris and Rome. At the Wigmore Hall, London, critics applauded her “stunning individuality,” and “amazing power and solidity of technique.” The Washington Post has praised her “cool-headed bravura and panache” and the Baltimore Sun lauded the “warmth and electricity in her playing.” Recent successes include concertos with the Columbia Orchestra, the Arlington Philharmonic, the Amadeus Orchestra, the Washington Sinfonietta, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Piedmont Symphony and others. She is also doubly talented as an accomplished jazz pianist, and has led her classical/jazz chamber ensemble SONOS for over a decade.\nDeeply committed to musical outreach and education, Rachel has a busy dual career as a popular music speaker, and since 2020 she has been greatly in demand for her unique online presentations. She is one of the Smithsonian Associates’ most popular live-streaming lecturers, and her topics explore intersections between classical and jazz music, film scores, and the fine arts. She is the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Strathmore Music Scholar in Residence and gives all the BSO’s pre-concert presentations at their Bethesda, MD venue, Strathmore Hall, as part of their “Inside the Classics” series. In 2023 she was one of the featured speakers at the Aspen Ideas: Health Conference in Colorado, presenting and performing on the subject of Music and the Natural World, a topic about which she was interviewed by WHYY’s Maiken Scott for The Pulse. Most recently he performed in multiple concerts and coached chamber music as string faculty for the prestigious Heifetz International Music Institute. He is Director of the Performance Academy for Strings, and Chair of the String Department at the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is also violin and chamber music faculty at Peabody Conservatory. \nChristian Tremblay holds a Diplôme D’Études Supérieures II from the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec where he studied with Liliane Garnier-Le Sage. He also earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Peabody Conservatory studying with violinist Martin Beaver. Christian Tremblay has been heard in cities throughout Canada and the United States as a recitalist and chamber musician. He is a member of the SONOS classical/jazz trio with pianist Rachel Franklin and bassist Jonathan Miles Brown, and is Principal Second violin with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, performing regularly with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic. \nJonathan Miles Brown \nDr. Jonathan Brown started his musical career as a chorister in the choir of Truro Cathedral, UK where in addition to singing at services and concerts he gave several solo recitals around the South West of the UK. At university he took up the electric bass, imparting his “singing” to the instrument.  Subsequently he performed with a wide range of jazz artists in formats including UK and European jazz festivals, BBC broadcasts, and venues such as the National Theatre, London and Ronnie Scott’s jazz club. These days, when he’s not running various biotechnology projects, he can be found playing in jazz venues in the DC area. He has been a frequent performer at the annual Maryland Summer Jazz festival and is a regular member of the “workshops” run by Annapolis based sax star Jeff Antoniuk. \nJonathan’s instrument is a Jazz Bass, originally hand built by Leo Fender, which he has ultra-customized by removing the frets, re-siting the bridge and adding numerous self-designed features and circuits.  The result is a wide sonic spectrum, from woody warmth to metallic brilliance, with glittering harmonics and large dynamic range.  Commented the Baltimore Sun: “The warm sound Brown produces is like no other I’ve heard.”\nContact SONOS at rff@rachelfranklin.com\n
