Title: “Shadow Play”
Dimensions: 6×12
Medium: Oil
Value: $359
Description: This piece was painted plein air in the summer. The two buildings were mostly in the shade, but I was struck by the bright light between them and the sun coming across the grass from the left and how the beautiful trunks of the trees were subtly catching the reflected warm light filtering through. I had to work fast to capture the scene before the light moved on.

Description:  Dogwood Harbor is a rendering of the active harbor during oyster season in Tilghman, MD. I changed the houses in the background to give the picture a humbler, small town feel. I also wanted the workboats to be the main focus to the observer.

Title: “Shadow Rose”
Dimensions: 9×12
Medium: Pastel
Value: $425
Description: One Mother’s Day my son sent me a rose bush as his gift. I planted it in my garden and it has bloomed every year since then just around Mother’s Day. Although the bush is in the sun primarily, because it is close to my crepe myrtle tree, at a certain time of the day part of the bush is in shadow. This bloom was so big and perfectly formed that I wanted to capture it creatively to emphasize the shady image it presented. Also, since roses are often difficult to render well, especially when fully opened, this was also a study exercise. I was happy with the result because it presented a very different feel than what I usually achieve when painting roses and was not constrained by presenting it in its local color.

Title: “The Gathering Storm”
Dimensions: 12×12
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Value: $450
Description: Every painting tells a story. I have worked with animals as subject for most of my professional career. I am interested in our relationships with them, and their inter species relationships. This painting continues my interest in journey as a metaphor, the unexpected that can occur, and how good can come from the experience. In this case, the fox and the tern find themselves voyaging together. Reflecting on the story of Huckleberry Finn during this painting, there may be challenges ahead for this unlikely duo, but they can also discover friendship, belonging, and support.

The painting is acrylic on canvas. My process uses acrylic gel infused paint to create layered marks and textures. These often create visual contrast with the more defined forms in the composition.
