MC Carey

MC Carey (they/them) is a Baltimore-based Black, Queer and Trans printmaker and illustrator focusing their art on hand carved linoleum block prints. MC is a self taught artist and started creating in 2017 before starting their printshop, Femme Prints, in 2018. MC started their journey in printmaking while working at a local Domestic Violence agency where they were working (as a survivor) with survivors to prevent gender based violence in Howard County, MD. MC found the art form a perfect tool for healing and art therapy both with themselves and the community. Much of their work is created with a healing narrative at the root– body liberation, Black Queer Joy, meditations on healing, etc. MC challenges their artistic flow by creating highly detailed, mostly single block, prints inspired by folktales, natural symbolism, and their ancestry. They love to play with texture and pay homage to traditional Japanese printmaking in their work.
